My Talking Mario (2013-2015)[]

My Talking Mario was a virtual pet game developed and published by Koala Studios for the iOS platform (specifically iPhone 6 and 7) in November 2013. The game featured Mario from the Super Mario Bros. franchise as a talking character, similar to Outfit7's Talking Tom series. The game was removed from the App Store in December 2015 due to copyright concerns.

Background[]

In the early 2010s, virtual pet games like Talking Tom Cat were immensely popular. Sensing an opportunity, Koala Studios, a small mobile game developer based in Minsk, Belarus, decided to capitalize on this trend by creating a game featuring a well-known character. They initially developed My Talking Sonic in 2012, which was met with legal action from Sega.

Despite the setback with Sega, Koala Studios proceeded with a similar concept, this time using Nintendo's Mario. My Talking Mario allowed players to interact with a 3D model of Mario. Players could feed him spaghetti, tickle him, play mini-games, and hear him repeat phrases in a distorted voice. The game quickly gained popularity, amassing a considerable number of downloads within its first few months.

Production[]

The development of My Talking Mario was reportedly a small-scale operation. According to an interview (now lost) with lead programmer Dimitri Volkov on a now-defunct Belarusian gaming blog, the entire game was developed by a team of just five people over the course of six months. Volkov stated that the team was aware of the potential copyright issues but hoped to avoid legal trouble by releasing the game discreetly.

The voice acting for Mario was provided by an uncredited voice actor who mimicked Charles Martinet's portrayal of the character. The game featured several unique animations and interactions, including Mario performing his signature jump, eating a Super Mushroom, and occasionally exclaiming "It's-a me, Mario!"

Availability[]

My Talking Mario was available on the App Store for approximately two years before being taken down in December 2015. The removal was a result of joint legal action by Outfit7 (creators of Talking Tom) and Nintendo. Samo Login, the founder of Outfit7, and Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, reportedly collaborated to address the unauthorized use of their intellectual property.

For years, the game was considered lost media. No known copies were available online, and discussions about the game were limited to obscure forum threads and online communities. However, in late 2020, a breakthrough occurred when DylanTheLegendz, a member of the "Talking Friends Lost Media Group," discovered a post on a Russian forum containing an IPA file (an iOS app package) for My Talking Mario.

DylanTheLegendz, who is fluent in Russian, contacted the forum user and explained the significance of the file as lost media. The user, after some persuasion, agreed to share the IPA file. After extensive testing and verification, the file was confirmed to be a working version of My Talking Mario.

The IPA file was eventually released to the public in 2023 and is now archived on several lost media websites, allowing users with compatible iOS devices (or emulators) to experience the game. The discovery of My Talking Mario is considered a significant find within the lost media community.

The takedown of My Talking Mario, along with the earlier My Talking Sonic incident, led to the eventual shutdown of Koala Studios.
