In 2002, Joe Murray was contacted by Viacom executives to produce a new version of Rocko's Modern Life for Comedy Central. Several of the head storyboard artists, screenwriters, and animators returned from the original Rocko's Modern Life series, with 30 episode scripts completed. The revival was supposed to premiere on 2004, but due to the critisim to the Spike animated series Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" (a 2003 reboot to Ren and Stimpy), it got cancelled even though the show was heavily into post-production at the time of its cancellation. However, several years later, Murray would been contacted by Nickelodeon to work on a revival special to the show. The special (Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling) reused the original idea for the cancelled revival's dropped pilot episode, which took place after the original show's finale.
